Montbello rec center sets reopening after fatal shooting of teen
Two weeks after a 14-year-old boy was killed inside, the Montbello Recreation Center will reopen Monday.
Mikail Payne was shot and killed inside the rec center around 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 21.
A day after the shooting, police announced that a juvenile suspect had been arrested. The 15-year-old boy is facing charges including manslaughter and assault. He is not being identified due to his age.
Since then, city leaders have been walking a fine line of working to support the community traumatized by the shooting, while understanding the rec center is a vital resource.
