Following arrest, Broncos’ Jonathon Cooper offers apology on social media
Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper has offered an apology following an arrest on charges of domestic violence.
“I apologize to my family to my friends and my community. … And so many others,’’ he wrote Saturday night on social media.
Cooper also posted a Bible phrase on social media, which reads in part, “Do not let anger lead you into sin, and do not stay angry all day.”
Cooper, 28, was booked into the Douglas County Jail early Friday morning for an incident that allegedly occurred at about 11:15 p.m. Thursday. He faces two charges of domestic violence and one charge of criminal mischief between $300 and $1,000. He was released from the jail Friday on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond.
Both Cooper and his girlfriend were arrested, with her accusing him of cheating and there being a dispute over a cell phone, according to an affidavit obtained by The Denver Gazette. Cooper got into a physical struggle with her, according to the affidavit, in which at one point he “braced his neck against (her) neck to prevent her from getting his phone.”
The Broncos on Friday issued a statement, saying, “We are aware of the matter and are gathering more information.” Cooper’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, has not returned messages since Friday seeking comment.
The Broncos last week had their first three sessions of organized team activities. They return to the field Tuesday through Thursday for OTAs at Broncos Park.
