Mountain biker killed in crash with Jeep on mountain road near Colorado Springs

On May 30, a mountain biker was killed in a crash with a Jeep Wrangler on Rampart Range Road in the area of Colorado Springs.

Per a report from KOAA, the cyclist has been identified as 55-year-old Robert Lucas with the fatal crash taking place at about 6 p.m. in the area of mile marker 7. Lucas was headed southbound on the gravel road, with Colorado State Patrol reporting he was in the opposite lane of traffic. When the northbound Jeep approached, Lucas attempted to brake, losing control and rolling to collide with the Jeep’s front left tire. He was ejected from the bike and pronounced deceased at the scene.

In days following the tragic crash, Robert Lucas has been mourned by the mountain biking community, remembered as a skilled cyclist, lover of wildlife, and a talented photographer. In one commemorative post, it’s noted that Rob once participated in the ‘Race Across America‘ – an ultra-distance road cycling race in which participants travel about 3,000 miles from the west coast to the east coast.

Per KOAA, the driver of the Jeep was not facing charges related to the crash at last report.

Undoubtedly a tragic situation and a difficult loss for Colorado’s mountain biking community, a crash of this nature serves as an awful reminder that many of the state’s roads have narrow lanes, steep grades, and blind turns. Because of this, it’s important for all travelers to mind their speed and to watch out for others using the same route, positioning oneself in a way that avoids the area close to an often-unmarked center line.

Sincere condolences go out to all of those impacted by Robert Lucas’ death.
