Air Force’s Texas Tanner falls 0.23 meters short of NCAA title, takes silver in hammer

In an event measured in dozens of meters, Air Force’s Texas Tanner fell centimeters short of an NCAA championship.

The senior threw 75.45 meters on his fifth hammer attempt at Hayward Stadium in Eugene, Ore., on Wednesday afternoon. The throw briefly placed him in the lead. But Minnesota’s Angelos Mantzouranis was next up and threw 75.78, giving the junior a margin of victory of 0.23 meters.

Tanner took the silver, following his fourth-place finish a year ago.

The meet is not complete for the most accomplished thrower at the NCAA Division I level in Falcons history. He’ll compete Friday in the discus. He entered this week with the top throw in the nation in both events.

Mantzouranis held the lead with 75.31 after his fourth throw when Tanner moved in front by 0.14 meters. Mantzouranis then quickly retook the lead. Tanner’s sixth, and final, throw traveled 74.78 meters.

Tanner was bidding to become Air Force’s first individual male champion at the D1 level in NCAA track and field.
