Contract talks have started with Broncos CB Ja’Quan McMillian but no deal appears imminent

Contract talks have started between the agent for cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian and the Broncos, but no deal appears imminent.

“We’ve had good conversations regarding Ja’Quan and his future,’’ McMillian’s agent, Deryk Gilmore, told The Denver Gazette on Wednesday. “It’s clear the organization values him and appreciates the contributions he’s made to the Broncos both on and off the field.”

As a restricted free agent last March, McMillian signed a one-year tender for $5.767 million. McMillian, entering his fifth Denver season, is in line to become an unrestricted free agent next March if a deal is not reached by then on an extension.

Indications are the Broncos are not anticipated to hand out any contract extensions until late this summer at the earliest.

McMillian has been Denver’s primary nickel back the past three seasons, and in 2026 was rated the NFL’s fourth-best cornerback by Pro Football Focus. McMillian last season beat out rookie Jahdae Barron to hold onto his job.

“Ja’Quan has enjoyed his time in Denver, believes in what the organization is building, and would certainly welcome the opportunity to remain a Bronco well into the future,’’ Gilmore said. “Out of respect for the process, we’ll keep those discussions (with the Broncos) private, but we look forward to continuing the dialogue when the timing is appropriate.”

Gilmore said he has had a “strong relationship” with Broncos general manager George Paton and vice president of football administration Rich Hurtado “for a number of years.” He made note of having been on the same Illinois staff with Broncos coach Sean Payton in 1996 when Payton was quarterbacks coach and he also was an Illini assistant.

The Broncos will conclude organized team activities Thursday with their sixth overall OTA practice. They will have a mandatory minicamp next Tuesday through Thursday before being off until the start of training camp in late July.

Surtain’s raise spread out

The Broncos last week gave star cornerback Pat Surtain II a $5 million raise, and they will spread that money out over the salary cap.

According to OvertheCap.com, Surtain’s $5 million will go down as an option bonus, enabling the Broncos to spread it out over five years, through a void season of 2030 on his contract. Surtain, who remains under contract through 2029, in 2026 will be on the cap for a $1.215 million base salary, $3 million for a signing bonus and $8.483 million for option bonuses, making his cap number $12.698 million.

Surtain, who signed in 2024 a four-year, $96 million contract extension that kicks in this season, also last week received a possible additional bonus of $5 million for 2026. Surtain, who has made four straight Pro Bowls and was All-Pro in 2022 and 2024, will get that amount if he is again named to the Pro Bowl or is again All-Pro.

Palczewski’s Polish

When Broncos offensive lineman Alex Palczewski is with his parents, they don’t speak speak English.

Palczewski’s father Andrzej and mother Bozena both immigrated from then-communist Poland to the Chicago area in the 1980s and later met each other. His parents long have spoken fluent English.

“I always speak Polish with them,’’ said Palczewski, who grew up in the Chicago suburb of Mount Prospect, Ill., speaking the language. “It feels weird to speak English with them. I always have to clean up my Polish whenever I do go home so I’m not slowly losing the language.”

Andrzej is a carpenter and Bozena a nurse.
