Hot and sunny in Denver on Friday with poor air quality

Another hot and sunny day is on tap in Denver on Friday, but health officials warn the poor air quality could impact people with respiratory issues.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Boulder said temperatures are expected to climb to 90 degrees on Friday in Denver. That’s about 8 degrees hotter than the average high for June 12 in Denver, according to weather service archive data. The record high is 97, last set in 2024.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment issued an Ozone Action Day Alert for Denver and most of the Front Range urban corridor from Douglas County in the south to Larimer County in the north and east to Weld, Adams and Arapahoe counties. It is in effect until 4 p.m. Friday.

Health officials said the poor air quality will impact people with respiratory issues and lung disease, such as asthma, and those individuals should “reduce prolonged or heavy outdoor exertion” on Friday.

Meteorologists said the northwest quadrant of Denver could also see some moderate heat risks on Friday, especially for people who are sensitive to heat and don’t have adequate access to cooling and hydration. Some health systems and industries could be impacted, the weather service said.

Winds are expected to blow at 5 to 14 mph, but could gust up to 22 mph on Friday, the weather service said.

Tonight, expect mostly clear skies with a low around 53 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to cool slightly on Saturday with the high only reaching 79 degrees. A chance for thunderstorms returns to the forecast on Sunday.
