Zach Allen: Broncos ‘fully expect’ to topple 1984 Bears’ sack record
ENGLEWOOD — Zach Allen is calling the shot of a Broncos defense aiming to make history.
Consider the NFL’s single-season team sack record — 72 by the 1984 Chicago Bears — officially on notice.
“We came close to the sack record last year,” Allen said last week following organized team activities (OTAs) at Broncos Park. “And we fully expect to break it this year.”
The Broncos set a franchise record with 68 team sacks last season. Allen predicts at least five more this year to break the NFL record. The Broncos must replace the lost production of defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, who signed with the Titans in free agency.
“Obviously, JFM is a friend for life,” Allen said. “When you get that type of money, you have to be happy for him. … The NFL just moves forward. That’s the nature of the business. We’ve got some really good guys here.”
The Broncos selected defensive tackle Tyler Onyedim with a third-round pick in the NFL draft. He’s made a strong first impression heading into minicamp next week.
“He’s got the hard part kind of done. You could definitely tell he’s got the physical traits, and then he’s got a good attitude about it,” Allen said. “So, he is always trying to learn (and) always asking questions. He really takes the film seriously, which is pretty rare for a young player. … When the pads are on, it’s going to be fun.”
Allen, 28, enters his eighth NFL season with high expectations. He earned first-team All-Pro recognition last season after 47 quarterback hits, 38 tackles, seven sacks and six pass deflections. Allen is likely to see more double teams as opponents seek to limit his damage.
“In this league, you’ve always got to just keep on finding new ways to get better and adjusting to stuff like that,” Allen said. “It also helps when you have (Vance Joseph) dialing stuff up that helps us get one-on-ones. So, we’ve got a lot of good guys and that’s going to create a lot of opportunities for people.”
Allen believes the Broncos can achieve sack greatness with the majority of their defensive line returning in 2026.
“Minus (Onyedim), it’s the same group that’s been here basically the past two years. They’ve got the same coach,” Allen said. “Sai’vion Jones, obviously, we were just so deep last year. It was tough for him to get in games. But we saw in practice how great he was. (Malcolm) Roach, if he didn’t have a calf injury, his production in the games he did have was awesome. … The standard is the standard. That’s our goal.
“We’re going to do everything we can to achieve it.”
