Man dies in Denver Sheriff’s custody in Downtown Detention Center

A man in the custody of the Denver Sheriff Department died Sunday after being found unresponsive at the downtown detention center, according to officials.

Sheriff’s deputies discovered the man shortly before 2 p.m. inside a housing unit at the Van Cise-Simonet Detention Center, according to a Sunday afternoon news release. Staff immediately began life-saving measures and called for an emergency medical response, according to authorities.

The individual was transported to Denver Health Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Denver Police Department will lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The department’s Public Integrity Division and the Office of the Independent Monitor have also been notified.

Authorities said they are limited in the information they can release while the investigation is ongoing.

The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the man’s identity and cause of death and will notify his family.
