Denver sex offender who fled trial captured
A sex offender who fled his trial in Denver last week ahead of a guilty verdict has been captured.
Denver’s FBI field office said in a Tuesday X post that Carl Vincent Avery, 61, had been captured by the Denver Police Department’s fugitive team and is now in custody. Avery was convicted last week of three counts of patronizing a child prostitute and three counts of distributing controlled substances to a minor. Avery gave a 17-year-old meth in exchange for sex several times over the course of a month, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
However, Avery failed to appear in court for the reading of the verdict and was declared a fugitive on Thursday.
In addition to last week’s conviction, Avery had twice been convicted of sex crimes, in 1998 and 2000. He also has an extensive criminal history, including arrests for third-degree assault, violation of a restraining order and forcible entry.
Records show Avery, as of Tuesday, is in Denver’s jail.
