First elk seen crossing newly constructed wildlife overpass
The first elk to use the newly constructed Greenland Wildlife Overpass have been spotted, according to a Facebook post from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
A video captured shows three elk make their way across the overpass.
According to CDOT, the overpass crosses Interstate 25 (I-25) near the Greenland Interchange between Larkspur and Monument, and is the world’s largest structure over a major roadway for wildlife to cross. Completed in December 2025, it was built through a partnership between CDOT, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), and Douglas County. It was designed to “improve wildlife connectivity and reduce the risk of wildlife-vehicle collisions.”
The overpass spans six lanes of interstate traffic, connects 39,000 acres of habitat on both sides of I-25, and measures 200 feet wide and 209 feet long. It is also part of the overall wildlife crossing system that’s expected to reduce wildlife-vehicle crashes along the stretch of I-25 by 90%.
This overpass was also designed to address the specific needs of large animals including elk, mule deer, and pronghorn.
