Injured mountain biker rescued after 200-foot fall
An injured mountain biker was recued after taking a 200-foot fall on the Calico Trail west of Rico on Saturday.
According to a post from the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office, San Miguel County Search and Rescue responded to Dolores County at around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday to help Dolores County Search and Rescue with extricating the injured mountain biker.
The injured biker was a 36-year-old man from Telluride, and was riding with two friends when he took the fall down a steep slope before coming to a stop. The uninjured riders were able to provide initial care and activate a search and rescue response using satellite texting to dispatchers, as one was an EMT and the other was a wilderness first responder.
Search and rescue teams were able to reach the injured biker, package him in a litter, and descend 1.5 miles to the trailhead. San Miguel Search and Rescue helped with wheeling the injured rider to the trailhead and an ambulance.
Five members of San Miguel County Search and Rescue worked on the mission, which took about 5.5 hours.
The sheriff’s office reminds the public that it’s important to be prepared in the backcountry, with having appropriate gear, plenty of food and water, and the proper training and ability to communicate with rescue resources.
