Man crushed to death by half-ton boulder while on trail in Colorado

A tragic situation unfolded on June 23 in Chaffee County, Colorado, when a man was killed by a boulder that dislodged along a trail.

According to a report from the sheriff’s office, two men employed by a moving company stopped at the Rapid 5 1/2 pullover after completing a job for a quick walk along a trail. This is located near the Arkansas River and along County Road 371 in Buena Vista. It’s in the area of a popular camping spot and a place the two men had previously stopped several times for lunch while passing through the area.

At about 1:40 p.m., one of the men called to report that his co-worker was walking back up the trail when dislodged rocks fell on him, causing serious injuries. The victim, identified as Paul Frasch, 59 and of Silverthrone, was found to be crushed by a boulder that was estimated to be at least 1/2 of a ton. The boulder was still on top of Frasch when rescue crews arrived with Frasch ultimately succumbing to the injuries he sustained. The co-worker who placed the call sustained minor injuries to his arms while attempting to help Frasch.

The incident remains under investigation. Sincere condolences go out to those impacted by this tragic death.
