Mudslides caused flooding at the Palm Theater and Telluride Intermediate School in Telluride on Friday, according to the Telluride Fire Protection District (TFPD).

According to a Facebook post from Telluride Fire, the agency responded to the Palm Theater at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday when a school official requested it while going to investigate reports of flooding.

When they arrived, firefighters found extensive water and mud surrounding the north and east sides of the Palm Theater and Telluride Intermediate School. Telluride Fire said that the crews immediately assessed the scene for life safety concerns, structural instability, gas leaks, electrical hazards and any other threats from the flooding and mudslides.

Telluride Fire said that the incident was caused by multiple mudslides that happened at around 3:30 p.m. from the Jud Wiebe Trail area between Butcher Creek and Cornet Creek. Most of the exterior doors had withstood the water, but one loading dock door sustained damage which allowed floodwater and mud to get into the theater. There was about three to four feet of standing water and mud in the building. Several classrooms and hallways at Telluride Intermediate School had about five to six inches of water and mud.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

“While we almost exclusively respond to fire and EMS-related emergencies, every once in a while we’re called to something rare like this flood,” said Telluride Fire Protection District Chief John Bennett. “No matter the nature of the incident, our priority is always taking care of our community.”
