Divers from the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team recovered a body Monday from Clear Creek Reservoir where a teenage boy from Buena Vista who was duck hunting Saturday went missing after his canoe capsized, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said in a news release.

The body was recovered about 12:30 p.m. Monday following continued search efforts that began Saturday at 5 p.m. in the 407-acre reservoir in Chaffee County. The body was taken to the county coroner’s office for official identification and cause of death, the news release stated.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team located the body in 25 feet of water about 270 yards off shore, according to the release. Pueblo’s search and rescue team recovered the body.

“We offer our condolences to the family of this young man,” Jim Aragon, CPW Area Wildlife Manager for the region, said in the release. “We hate seeing a life lost so tragically. This was a terrible accident.”

Parks and wildlife officers responded to an emergency call about 5 p.m. Saturday of witnesses reporting two boys had fallen in the water when their canoe flipped while they were duck hunting, the news release said. A search and rescue operation was immediately initiated at the reservoir 15 miles north of Buena Vista.

The father of one of the boys swam toward the boat and was able to grab one of the boys. Parks and wildlife officers Kevin Madler and Zach Baker helped the man and boy back to shore as they faced 33-degree water and 20 mph winds, the news release said. But they were unable to locate the other boy as darkness set in. The canoe and other items washed ashore Sunday.
