Often called the world’s most dangerous automobile race, violent wrecks are no rarity during the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs. Competitors race up more than 150 turns as their vehicles can top 100 miles per hour in some sections, gaining 4,720 feet of elevation on a 12.42-mile course that’s often flanked by massive drop-offs and cliffs.

One of the wildest wrecks to ever occur on the track involved driver Jeremy Foley and his co-driver Yuri Kouznetsov, taking place in 2012. Near the Devil’s Playground area of the course, at about 13,000 feet of elevation, their Mitsubishi Evolution 8 sails off the 14,115-foot mountain, colliding with rocky terrain and rolling a reported 14 times.

See multiple angles of the wreck in the video below. Perhaps the most shocking angle of the crash can be seen roughly 35 seconds in, capturing the vehicle flipping multiple times before coming to a stop.

Both drivers somehow emerged unscathed aside from a few scrapes and bruises and a dislocated shoulder.

All Pikes Peak Hill Climb racers have not been as fortunate as the two in the video, with seven deaths attributed to the race. Most recently, well-known motorcycle racer Carlin Dunne died after a crash that took place just 20 yards from the finish line. He is remembered as one of the greats. This resulted in the removal of motorcycle racing during the following year’s event due to safety concerns.

With much of the race taking place above treeline, the track is anything but consistent. Drivers encounter rocks, unpredictable weather, and even wildlife on the course. It’s easy to see why this race is one of the most dangerous around.
