Columbine High School fire forces evacuation, 2 firefighters injured

Columbine High School Fire

A fire within Columbine High School’s woodshop classroom closed the school for the remainder of Wednesday, injuring two firefighters and leading to a school evacuation.

There were no reported injuries of students or staff.

The fire was first reported on a scanner at 10:47 a.m., according to a series of South Metro Fire District postings on social media platform X.

Authorities said the flames began as a smoldering fire located at the woodshop classroom, creating a flash fire in the school’s ventilation system. Fire officials noted it was an exterior fire in the wood dust collector.

Two firefighters were evaluated for minor injuries, according to South Metro Fire District. Both were treated and evaluated on-scene, officials said.

Students were evaluated for respective medical needs, according to fire officials.

In an email to family and staff, Columbine High School’s principal assured the safety of everyone in the building, including those from six Columbine area schools who were at the high school for a theater production, according to The Denver Gazette news partner 9NEWS.

Normal school bus routes were available to students during the evacuation, according to the school.

South Metro Fire officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
