‘We missed this one’ | DPS admits they should have delayed school following overnight snow storm

Many Denver Public Schools students had no choice but to brave treacherous road conditions Friday morning, as the district decided against issuing a delay or cancellation despite heavy snowfall in many parts of the city.

The decision left many parents frustrated, with some opting to keep their children home while others risked the hazardous commute.

For DPS parent Gerard Torrez, the district’s choice was a letdown.

“We thought for sure that DPS would have at least called a two hour delay,” Torrez said. “DPS has always touted how important kids and the safety of kids is and just today was not a good example of that.”

Torrez was not the only parent frustrated with the lack-of-action. One Central Park mother shared a video of the snow-covered streets, calling the conditions at 7:30 a.m. “horrific and dangerous.”

In the West Barnum neighborhood, another parent reported that plows didn’t clear her street until school had already started.

“I get it, there’s always the risk,” Torrez added. “We should at least be given enough time to shovel and get our driveway and sidewalks cleared and also give enough time for the city workers who we value and support a lot in clearing the roads and making sure the roads are clear for families to get their safely.”
