A teen left home after an argument with his father in Colorado’s ski country, resulting in a mountainside rescue operation.

According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the teenager left his home in the Keystone area after a verbal altercation with his father. The teen left without shoes and socks.

After leaving, the teen hiked up a mountain and ended up in trouble when cramping and cold feet prevented him from hiking back down. With a dying phone battery, he called for help and was told by rescuers to stay put and wait for their arrival.

Deputies of the sheriff’s office along with members of Summit County Rescue Group responded to the teens location on ATVs, able to find him about two hours after the call for help was placed.

Ultimately, no injuries were reported and the teen was reunited with his family.

While this situation does highlight the importance of wearing proper footwear while hiking, it also shows the importance of staying put while waiting for rescue. As long as there’s not imminent danger that makes staying put a serious risk, remaining in the same spot where a call for help is made can help expedite the search and rescue response.
