Denver suspect from viral ‘No Kings’ video raising legal funds

The man arrested in connection to the viral Denver “No Kings” protest video has raised more than $4,000 in legal funds.
The video — filmed by Drew Kartos — showed a man in a New York Giants shirt yelling homophobic slurs at protesters near Union Station on Oct. 18.
The man continues to yell when someone steals his sunglasses. The unidentified man then begins to chase protesters down the street, where he apparently slips and falls on his face.
The man got back up and kept running, swatting at protesters. A hooded individual then appeared to trip him, sending him to the ground again. When he stood up again, he had a cut and blood on his face. He pushed through the crowd a bit longer before being told to leave by protesters.
Denver Police Department officers at the protest eventually arrested 20-year-old Jose Cardenas after he allegedly eluded officers to the 1400 block of North Lincoln Street, the department said.
Cardenas was initially arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault in connection to the alleged tripping, but the charges were later lowered to theft, as Cardenas was allegedly the one to grab the yeller’s glasses.
“I was at the No Kings protest and got arrested for second-degree assault when I only took the guys glasses. I now have court Nov. 3,” Cardenas wrote in a GoFundMe that has raised over $4,500 for legal fees in a week.
Some donations have reached $100 and $200.
The suspect in connection to the alleged tripping has not been identified. The man yelling homophobic slurs was not arrested, according to police.
“Screaming obscenities would fall under free speech. The victim was not arrested,” a spokesperson from the department told The Denver Gazette.
The faceplant was heard around the country with thousands of posts on social media.
“Two wrongs don’t make a right,” Kartos, who filmed the video, told The Denver Gazette. “At the same time, there’s definitely no place for hate speech or homophobic slurs. It’s very unwise to walk past a demonstration and try to aggravate the participants.”
While the man in the New York Giants shirt has not been identified, the Denver Broncos did play the Giants the next day, touting one of the biggest comebacks of all time to defeat the New York team 33-32.
