Martin Necas signs eight-year, $92 million extension with Colorado Avalanche

There will be a lot more Marty Parties in Colorado for the foreseeable future.

The Avalanche said Thursday they have signed Martin Necas to an eight-year extension that will kick in starting with the 2026-27 season. The total contract will cost $92 million, according to a report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, which comes out to an $11.5 million cap hit for the 26-year-old forward. Friedman also reported the contract will include a full no-move clause for the first seven years and contains over $60 million in signing bonuses.

Necas is coming off a career-best 83-point season and has 13 points in 11 games this season. Necas’ eight-game point streak to start this season is the longest of his career. He was acquired in January from the Carolina Hurricanes, along with Jack Drury, in exchange for Mikko Rantanen and immediately hit it off with Nathan MacKinnon. The two have become a dominant duo in short order for the Avalanche.

An elated Necas spoke to the media after practice, noting that the next team dinner from the team is likely one he’s going to have to pay for.

“Super excited and happy that we got this done,” he said. “I’m excited for the times ahead now and now I can just focus on playing hockey, winning hockey games, and do whatever it takes to bring a Cup back here to Colorado.”

The extension came together over the last week, as Necas said he had a good feeling it was going to get done before he signed on the dotted line before Thursday’s practice. For general manager Chris MacFarland, it allows him not to have to worry about facing a similar situation after what he dealt with one year prior with Rantanen.

It was clear that was the goal.

“Really nice (to get this done),” MacFarland said with a grin. “It’s always good when you can get them done as quick as possible, right? It just takes all the conjecture out of it.”

Trust was something Necas said was nice to see from an organization, something he didn’t feel like he necessarily had in Carolina. Of course, he gave the organization plenty of reasons to have that faith in him.

“I think he’s an electric top-line winger at 26, turning 27 years old,” MacFarland said. “They’re hard to find, they’re hard to acquire … but I think the fit has been really good. His speed, his skill, his talent blends in really well here, but it would blend in anywhere, to be honest. He’s a very good hockey player, and we’re lucky to have him.”

And perhaps, from his point of view, he’s happiest to not have to be asked about this situation again. Now he can turn his attention to another big money deal he’ll look to get done next summer.

“MacKinnon has a significant contract, hopefully (Makar) in the near future,” MacFarland said.
