Icy conditions present during fatal multi-vehicle crash on mountain highway in Colorado
Colorado drivers, be warned – snow might not be consistently falling quite yet, but slick conditions on roadways around the state can be present, especially during cooler early-morning hours.
According to Colorado State Patrol, one person is dead after a wreck that took place on U.S. Highway 24 just east of Florissant at about 5:44 a.m. on Monday morning. The multi-vehicle wreck occurred amid icy conditions around mile marker 270, which is just about where the winding stretch of road between Florissant and Divide starts to straighten out.
According to a report about the situation, the tragic crash followed a westbound Ram 1500 sliding into eastbound lanes. At that point, the truck collided with an eastbound Hyundai Elantra head-on. After that initial collision, a Jeep Gladiator that was traveling behind the Elantra slid into the rear of the Elantra followed by a Ford F250 striking the rear of the Gladiator before traveling off the shoulder and into the rear of the Elantra, as well.
The wreck resulted in a closure along US 24 between Teller County Road 1 and Teller County Road 42, accounting for a large portion of the highway traveling between Florissant and Divide. During the closure, traffic was diverted onto county roads until the route reopened at 9:50 a.m.
The driver of the Ram – the truck reportedly involved in the initial head-on collision – was transported to a local hospital via ambulance. Meanwhile, the driver of the Elantra was airlifted from the scene for care, later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
The identity of those involved has not been released. Anyone who witnessed the accident but has not yet spoken with investigators has been asked to call Colorado State Patrol dispatch at 719-544-2424.
Condolences go out to those impacted by this crash and the resulting death.
