Car in deadly Douglas County crash was carjacked from Aurora RTD parking garage

The driver of a car that spun out of control, crashed and killed five people, including three children, in Douglas County south of Franktown on Monday had stolen the vehicle out of Aurora, authorities said.
An Aurora Police Department spokesperson told The Denver Gazette the man carjacked the vehicle at a Regional Transportation District parking garage around 3:45 p.m. on Monday.
Less than an hour later, the stolen Toyota Matrix hatchback lost control while traveling southbound on Colorado 83, near Russellville Road. The vehicle struck a Ford Fusion sedan head-on. An adult driver and five juveniles occupied the sedan, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
On Tuesday, the State Patrol said the driver of the Ford Fusion was a 35-year-old man from Colorado Springs. He died in the crash. The Toyota Matrix driver, a 31-year-old man from Denver, also died in the crash.
The passengers of the Ford Fusion were identified as a 13-year-old girl, an 8-year-old boy, a 12-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy, all from Colorado Springs. The 13-year-old girl and 14-year-old boy were airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries, according to the State Patrol.
The sedan’s driver and three of the juveniles were pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.
The man who drove the Toyota Matrix stole the hatchback at the Nine Mile Station parking structure, according to the Aurora Police Department. The RTD station is located along Colorado 83, which turns into Parker Road.
The vehicle’s owner said she was getting into her Toyota on the first level when a man approached her, held the door open and asked for a ride, according to the Aurora police.
When the victim refused, the suspect pulled her from the driver’s seat, then drove off.
The Aurora police confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that the 31-year-old man who died was the Nine Mile Station garage carjacking suspect. The RTD station is located 21 miles north of the crash site.
Aurora police are investigating the carjacking as a separate case. Transit police aren’t involved in the carjacking investigation, according to an RTD spokesperson.
A third vehicle, a Ford pickup, had been behind the Ford Fusion and had stopped just before the crash scene. No damage was observed on that vehicle and authorities determined it was not involved.
GoFundMe accounts posted on Tuesday called for support for two of the children who died, as well as for a girl currently being treated in the intensive care unit.
“On the 24th of November, the … family faced every parent’s worst nightmare. In a tragic car accident in Franktown, Colorado, we lost two beautiful children,” according to the page posted by the children’s grandmother.
Another GoFundMe page was posted for a third child.
The Denver Gazette has reached out to contacts listed on the GoFundMe pages.
The Douglas County Coroner will provide the identifications of the victims, pending autopsies and family notifications. The coroner has not yet responded to an inquiry from The Denver Gazette.
