Colorado loses two key players to transfer portal

Deion Sanders’ job of rebuilding the Colorado roster just got a lot harder.

After a 3-9 season, the Buffaloes will lose both wide receiver Omarion Miller and safety Tawfiq Byard to the transfer portal when it opens next month, both players confirmed via social media Wednesday.

Miller had a breakout junior season at CU, leading the team in receptions (45), receiving yards (808) and receiving touchdowns (eight).

The Louisiana native and sophomore Joseph Williams (second on the team in catches, yards and touchdowns) were expected to give freshman quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis a reliable duo of pass catchers, but Coach Prime and the Buffs will likely have to bring in multiple wideouts from the transfer portal.

Byard was unquestionably the best player on a bad CU defense in 2025. He led the team in tackles (79) and forced fumbles (2), while also racking up half a sack, four passes defended and one interception.

The sophomore came to Boulder after two seasons at South Florida and was projected to be a top returner for defensive coordinator Robert Livingston, but his departure means that unit will look almost entirely different in 2026.

The Buffs have also recently had a departure in the recruiting department as director of player personnel Corey Phillips left the program to become the general manager at Memphis for new coach Charles Huff. CU will reportedly promote director of recruiting Darius Darden-Box to fill Phillips’ role.
