Smaller-market reaction

Coach Sean Payton gave the Jaguars bulletin board material last week when he described Jacksonville as a “smaller-market team” leading up to a 34-20 home loss to the Jaguars.

“A small-market team like us can come into Mile High and get it done,” Jaguars coach Liam Coen told reporters on Sunday at Empower Field.

On Monday, Payton clarified his “smaller-market team” comment during a media teleconference.

“That topic came up strictly because not enough of the country has seen how good these guys are playing,” Payton said. “That was a good job by Liam. He was looking for a rallying cry. Obviously, if you were listening to the press conference, the intention was strictly: ‘Hey, quietly these guys are sitting here right near the top of the AFC. They’re ready to win their division.’ I spent 16 years at a small market. It was just a way for a coach to take it and use it to his advantage.”

Estimated injury report

The Broncos released an estimated injury report Monday with no practice. Denver (12-3) travels to play the Chiefs (6-9) on Thursday in Kansas City.

Four Broncos were estimated as non-participants due to injury: tight end Nate Adkins (knee), wide receiver Pat Bryant (concussion), linebacker Dre Greenlaw (hamstring) and center Luke Wattenberg (shoulder).

Four Broncos were estimated as full participants with injury designations: cornerback Riley Moss (ankle), left guard Ben Powers (biceps), linebacker Karene Reid (hamstring) and linebacker Justin Strnad (foot).

Briefly

Bryant suffered a concussion Sunday resulting from a collision with Jaguars cornerback Montaric Brown. Bryant was immobilized and carted off the field. On Monday, Payton said: “(Bryant) was checked out (from the hospital) last night, fortunately, he and his mother. I will see him this morning.” … The Broncos converted just 5 of 14 third-down attempts against Jacksonville. Payton said: “I think that it comes back to the simple fundamentals … and not trying to create or do more than what’s on the table. There were plenty of opportunities in that game, and we didn’t take advantage of them.” … Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman will be serving a two-game NFL suspension in Week 18 against the Broncos. Perryman was punished on Monday for “repeated violations of playing rules intended to protect the health and safety of players.”
