Denver Zoo investigating Malayan tapir deaths

The zoo said its animal care and health teams were investigating the recent deaths of two Malayan tapirs, as they happened in a short period of time.

DENVER — Teams at the Denver Zoo are working to determine what happened to their two Malayan tapirs, who recently died.

In a Friday post, the zoo announced the deaths of 16-year-old JohHi and 18-year-old Rinny. Animal care and health teams are “thoroughly investigating” the tapirs’ passing, as both animals died “in a relatively short period of time,” the zoo said.

There is no risk to other animals, employees and visitors at the zoo, according to the post.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work to understand what happened and ensure we are providing the best possible care for our animals now and in the future,” the zoo said in its post.
