Copper Mountain out-of-state skier dies after crash into tree Saturday

An out-of-state skier at Copper Mountain died Saturday after he lost control and crashed into a tree, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said.

The man, who was wearing a helmet, lost control while on American Flyer, an intermediate-level trail, and hit the tree with “considerable force,” the office said on social media Saturday afternoon.

Deputies first responded after getting a report of the crash around 10:45 a.m. Saturday, police said. No other skiers or riders were involved in the crash, though it was witnessed by at least one other person.

Copper Mountain Ski Patrol responded to the scene and took the skier to the CommonSpirit Emergency and Urgent Care facility at the base of the mountain, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

“Some deputies serve as deputy coroners for deaths in remote areas and ski areas,” said Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons in the post. “Most of the time, fatal crashes are tragic accidents, and nothing more. Our investigation helps loved ones better understand the circumstances of their loss.”

The Summit County Coroner’s Office will determine the man’s official cause and manner of death and release his identity at a later date.
