Leader of West Denver gang pleads guilty to conspiracy to commit murder

Philip Baca is the last of 11 Few But Plenty gang members to plead out

Three years after his grand jury indictment, the leader of a street gang that terrorized West Denver with drive-by shootings, mostly against rival groups, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder.

Philip Baca was the last of 11 members of the Few But Plenty gang indicted on 114 felony counts for 14 shootings that occurred between 2019 and 2022 and affected 47 victims.

The investigation was nicknamed “Operation Ricochet” based on the danger to the public caused by the multiple drive-by shootings.

“In numerous instances, innocent bystanders who had nothing to do with the inter-gang feuds were the victims of this violence,” the Denver District Attorney’s office said in a statement.

According to the press release, Baca not only encouraged FBP members to commit the crimes but ordered them as well. The investigation found that many of the gang members were his sons and nephews. Though he normally called the shots, Baca went out on one drive-by shooting when they shot the home of a rival gang member 20 times, the DA’s office stated.

Few But Plenty gained popularity with music videos they produced, which often followed acts of violence and showed downtown Denver scenes, including skyscrapers, the City and County building, and Denver police cars. The gang made nearly $13,000 from their music videos, which were shown on YouTube.

Denver District Attorney John Walsh acknowledged the multi-year investigation and prosecution as “powerful steps toward fighting organized crime and improving public safety for all Denver residents.”

Baca will serve 33 years in prison, according to the terms of his plea agreement. His sentencing is scheduled for June 27.
