Larimer inmate charged with assaulting, injuring staff members
Carmen Scott Musso, 44, allegedly sent three deputies to the hospital following his arrest on Thursday
A Larimer County inmate allegedly sent three deputies to the hospital following his arrest on Thursday, leading to three possible second-degree assault charges.
Carmen Scott Musso, 44 was arrested by Fort Collins Police Services on Thursday on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs with over three priors, attempted escape, possession of an illegal weapon, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to a press release from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.
Due to his behavior during the initial arrest, Musso was placed in the Larimer County Jail as an uncooperative arrestee — meaning he was placed in a secluded cell and monitored during the booking process.
Musso “appeared to be more cooperative” early Friday morning. Two deputies attempted to move him from the cell. During the move, he allegedly turned and attacked one of the deputies, causing “significant injury,” according to the press release.
Two other deputies and additional staff members attempted to intervene, but Musso allegedly attacked the deputies. He also allegedly attempted to take a taser from one of the deputies, but failed.
Musso was restrained and placed back into the holding cell.
Three deputies were transported to an area hospital, one with serious injuries and two with minor injuries. All victims are expected to recover, according to the department.
The suspect now faces two possible additional charges of second-degree assault on a peace officer and one charge of attempting to disarm a peace officer.
The Larimer County Court initially issued a $10,000 cash bond for the arrest. During a second bond hearing after the jail assault, he was issued an additional $50,000 cash bond.
“We expect our staff to treat everyone in our jail with dignity and respect, and that’s exactly how our deputies approached this individual. It’s the right thing to do, and it makes our facility safer. It absolutely sickens me to see this unprovoked and calculated violence against our deputies,” Larimer County Sheriff John Feyen said in the press release.
