Adams County deputy killed in off-duty pedestrian crash
Joshua Tapia died on Wednesday. Police continue to investigate the crash
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the death of a deputy who was killed in an off-duty pedestrian crash Tuesday.
Adams County deputy Joshua Tapia died following a pedestrian-auto crash in the area of State Hwy 52 and South Purman Avenue, in Fort Lupton, around 9:30 p.m., according to a press release from the Fort Lupton Police Department.
“As an organization and a close-knit law enforcement family, we are deeply saddened by this loss,” the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said in a social media post Wednesday. “Our hearts and thoughts are with his loved ones, friends, and colleagues in Adams County during this difficult time.”
Tapia was a deputy with Adams County for 25 years and was also a father and husband, the sheriff’s office said. He was a member of the county’s Rampart Search and Rescue (RSAR) — a group that provides free search and rescue assistance to local and federal agencies during missing person searches.
The Fort Lupton Police Department continues to investigate the incident and no arrests have been made. The department asks that anyone with information or surveillance camera footage to contact them at 720-466-6151.
There were 63 pedestrian-automotive deaths in the state between Jan. 1 and Oct. 3 this year, a significant drop from the 94 in the same time period last year, according to data from the Colorado Department of Transportation.
