Kickin’ it with Kiz: Rockies are red hot and manager Bud Black wants to send me a limo to attend games
But will shortstop Ezequiel Tovar make his first playoff appearance wearing the uniform of the Rockies ... or the Yankees?
Get excited about the Rockies? Get above .500 and we’ll talk. We’ve seen streakiness like this from this team, and it rarely pans out. Still would like to see new ownership, preferably someone who cares more about fielding a consistently competitive team over selling margaritas.

Kiz: Party on, Rockies! We all know they ain’t going to make the playoffs, but that doesn’t prevent us from raising a frosty drink to toast the 14-13 record of your Scrappy Lil Rox in in May, which included a series sweep of the reigning world champs and ending a losing streak to the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Who saw that coming? Not me. So long as the Rockies are rolling, save me a seat in the sunshine at Coors Field. When I recently informed Colorado manager Bud Black his team is undefeated with me in attendance, he replied: “I have a limo. We’ll come pick you up. Not an uber. A real limo. It’s the big leagues.”
Sadly, this recent streak of success by the Rockies will make fans think the team is closer to being a contender than they really are.
– M.B., nobody’s fool
Kiz: Yes, I know there are hecklers and hacks in this dusty old cowtown that think Black is among this team’s biggest problems. Puh-leeze. Show me a skipper that can coax a winning record for even a month from these Pet Rocks and I’ll show you one of the better managers in the major leagues. Imagine what Black could do for you if was in charge of a bona fide contender instead of a babysitting service for franchise owner Dick Monfort.
Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar looks good, but the Rockies still have a roster full of holes. Getting a good general manager and front office would help, because hoping for new ownership isn’t realistic.
– Brad, ringing the bell
Kiz: OK, even the snarky staff at Kickin’ It Headquarters thinks it’s only fair to give general manager Bill Schmidt credit for signing Tovar to a seven-year contract worth $84 million before his market value shot through the roof. So we figure Tovar could be representing Colorado at the All-Star Game from now through 2031. But we do wonder: Will Tovar’s first appearance in a playoff game be for the Rockies … or the Yankees (after he finally hits free agency).
The late, great Bill Walton was one of a kind.

Kiz: I’m grateful for the big goofy redhead that gave us these goofy reminders: Sports are not serious. Music speaks to the soul and reveals what’s in your heart. The outside-the-box thinkers have more fun. And once in a while, you get shown the light in the strangest places if you look at it right. Gonna miss ya, Bill.
And today’s parting shot offers an alternative to some knucklehead’s idea of trading Michael Porter Jr.
Can we trade Kiz to the Siberian Basketball League?
– Mike, wishful thinker
