Douglas County chase ends in Castle Rock with police shooting

One suspect allegedly shot at police, another suspect was taken into custody

A car chase from Thornton to Castle Rock ended with a suspect shot by police officers following a “volley” of gunfire.

Thornton police attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle — a black Chevrolet Silverado — that they believed had been stolen around 5 a.m. on Wednesday in the area of I-76 and 58th Avenue, Douglas County Sheriff Darren Weekly said in a press conference.

The suspect vehicle fled toward I-25. The suspect in the vehicle fired at police, with at least two volleys of gunfire, according to Weekly.

The pursuit continued southbound on I-25. Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputies picked up the chase at County Line Road, south of I-25. The chase continued into Castle Rock.

The vehicle sideswiped two civilian vehicles during the chase and attempted to hit officers deploying stop sticks, Weekly said.

The pursuit ended at a 7-Eleven located at 80 Plum Creek Parkway, Denver Gazette news partner 9News reported, which is near Plum Creek Parkway and South Wilcox Street.

The suspect vehicle crashed into the 7-Eleven but didn’t harm anyone inside, according to Weekly. Once stopped, the driver allegedly “brandished a handgun at our deputies and the deputies fired on the suspect,” Weekly said. Deputies shot the suspect “several” times.

Another suspect — a woman in the passenger seat — was unharmed and is currently in custody. The suspect shot was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to live.

None of the officers or deputies involved in the pursuit were injured. The officer-involved shooting will be investigated by the 18th Judicial District’s Critical Incident Response Team, per department policy.

SKY9 was over the scene at the 7-Eleven and showed the suspect pickup truck had crashed through the front of the store.
