Aurora theater cancels ‘Black Nativity’ musical

A theater based in Aurora canceled its upcoming “Black Nativity” musical, an official from the company said on Wednesday.

Vintage Theater produces up to 10 plays a year in the East Colfax Arts District in Aurora.

ShaShauna Staton, the board president of Vintage Theater, estimated the potential revenue loss in the $30,000 range, though she said she doesn’t have exact numbers.

“Our musicals are our biggest money-makers,” Staton said, noting the show’s cancelation would have a significant financial effect on the theater.

On Facebook, the theater attributed the show’s cancellation to “multiple challenges and unforeseen circumstances … to support the safety and health of the cast and crew.”

Staton confirmed the theater fired its director, Lisa Young.

In the time leading up to Young’s firing, Staton said she watched the morale go down among the cast, adding she’s “never seen anything like this” in her 40-plus years in theater.

Reached on the phone, Young told The Denver Gazette, “They said I was fired? Well, I really don’t have a comment on that.” But on a Facebook post authored by a cast member saying Young had been “let go,” Young did not refute that she was fired, specifically commenting, “This is an attack and the community needs to respond.”

Young told The Gazette there were emails showing Artistic Director Bernie Cardell was happy with the production.

“There are 39-some Black people who lost the opportunity to bring their talent to the community,” Young said.
