Douglas County high school senior named state finalist for Google Doodle contest

Isabella Rosabal, a senior at Rock Canyon High School in Douglas County, has been named a finalist for the 13th annual Doodle for Google competition.

This year, the contest had K-12 students across the U.S. design a Google Doodle inspired by the theme “I am strong because,” asking students to consider what keeps them moving forward during tough times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

For her doodle, Rosabal drew herself with wings filled with her ancestors and family members.

“My ancestors, as well as my family, give me the strength to freely express myself,” Rosabal said. “They give me the strength to share my voice with the world and overcome the vitriol I am subject to because of it.”

Rosabal’s doodle was selected as the state winner out of thousands of entries. Next, her doodle will go up against the other 54 state and territory winners in a public vote.

The results of the vote, which closed Friday, will determine the five national finalists, one of which will become the national winner and have their Doodle featured on the Google homepage for a day.

Google will announce the five national finalists in June. All of the national finalists will win a $5,000 college scholarship, Google hardware and Google swag.

The national winner will win a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology package for their school or a selected nonprofit organization.
