DPS, Cherry Creek to continue indoor mask enforcement for rest of school year

At least two metro school districts will continue enforcing masks indoors for the remainder of the school year.

Despite Gov. Jared Polis lifting the state’s mask mandate last week, Denver Public Schools announced Monday it will keep its existing policies in place for the remainder of the school year.

This means students will still be required to wear masks indoors and outdoors, maintain social distancing, complete daily health screens and continue to meet virtually, according to the district’s website.

However, the outdoor mask mandate will be lifted by DPS after the school year and will only be required indoors during the district’s summer programs.

Similarly, the Cherry Creek School District announced Tuesday evening that students are still required to wear masks indoors but not outside.

Both districts cite students being eligible to be vaccinated as the reasoning to keep policies in place. Only Coloradans 12 and older can received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“We know how important it is to maintain safe and healthy practices in our schools and minimize risks as much as possible,” DPS officials said in a release. “We are excited to see our vaccination rates increase and our community case counts decrease. And we look forward to getting all of our schools back to full strength.”
