Wife dies after 88-year-old husband has medical episode, crashes into building
The passenger in Saturday’s single-vehicle crash into a building in south Aurora has died from her injuries, the Aurora Police Department announced Sunday.
Police said the crash happened when the 88-year-old driver experienced an apparent medical episode while driving, causing him to lose control and crash into a residential building at 13952 E. Marina Drive at 11:45 a.m.
The passenger who died was the driver’s elderly wife, police said. Her identity will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office once her family has been notified.
The wife was taken to a hospital in critical condition but she was later pronounced dead. The husband is still hospitalized in serious condition, police said.
In addition, when the driver lost control of the vehicle, he struck and killed a leashed dog that was being walked by its owner near the building. Police originally reported the dog was inside the vehicle.
The building did not suffer any structural damage as a result of the crash, officials said.
The Aurora Police Traffic Investigations Unit is continuing to investigate the crash. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police at 303-739-6000.
At this time, no criminal charges are expected to be pursued against the driver, police said.
