76-year-old man accused of fatally shooting neighbor found guilty
A man accused of fatally shooting his neighbor after being called a racial slur was convicted Wednesday on murder and other charges.
The Denver District Court jury deliberated three and a half hours and found Lessie Britton, 76, guilty of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and menacing, according to a release from the district attorney’s office.
“Britton killed Mr. Fernando Martinez-Briones in front of his two sons, one of whom was a juvenile at the time,” Denver District Attorney Beth McCann said in the release. “Not only did this horrific act scar the family of Mr. Martinez-Briones, it also traumatized the broader neighborhood.”
Police were dispatched to an undisclosed area of North Willow Street on June 17, 2020, after a report of a shooting with multiple victims. When they arrived, officers found two victims, including Martinez-Brioles, 46, who was shot in the chest, according to the release.
Martinez-Brioles was transported to University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators learned from a witness that Martinez-Brioles was shot by a man in a gold Ford Bronco. Someone known to Britton arrived on scene and told officers the man was headed to the station to turn himself in, authorities said.
Within minutes, officers found Britton near East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and North Monaco Street ,and took him into custody without incident., officials said.
Britton is scheduled to appear in court for a status conference Aug. 2 at 8:30 a.m. when a sentencing date is to be set.
