Driver dies after suffering medical episode, crashing into Aurora gas station

One person died after a single-vehicle crash at an Aurora gas station Tuesday evening, the Aurora Police Department said.

Police said a 62-year-old man suffered an apparent medical episode about 5:30 p.m. while driving eastbound on East Hampden Avenue toward South Chambers Road.

The driver crossed into westbound traffic, drove onto a sidewalk, struck a bus bench, then crashed into a pump at a Shell gas station at 15291 E. Hampden Ave.

Police said the driver was taken to a hospital where he later died. It is unclear if he died from the medical episode or from injuries suffered during the crash.

One person in a parked car outside the gas station also suffered minor injuries when their car was struck by the vehicle, police said. That person was taken to a hospital and has since been released.

The driver’s identity and official cause of death will be released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office after his family has been notified.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Aurora Police Department.

The crash resulted in the closure of southbound Chambers Road and a single-lane closure of eastbound Hampden Avenue for more than an hour while officers processed the scene.
