Denver police to collect unwanted medicine, vaping devices in drop off event

The Denver Police Department will collect people’s unwanted and unused medication Saturday for National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

In the annual event, police collect and ensure the environmentally-safe disposal of prescription medicines to reduce the likelihood of drug misuse or abuse.

In 2018, 9.9 million people in the U.S. misused prescription drugs, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. The survey found that most users obtained the drugs from friends and family, often taking them from home medicine cabinets.

Nine drop off locations will be open across the city from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Locations are 1311 W. 46th Ave. in District 1, 3921 Holly St. in District 2, 1625 S. University Blvd. in District 3, 2100 S. Clay St. in District 4, 4685 Peoria St. in District 5 and 1566 Washington St. in District 6.

Other drop-offs will be at King Soopers at 2810 N. Quebec St., 10406 E. MLK Jr Blvd. and 18605 E. Green Valley Ranch Blvd.

The event will not accept needles, mercury thermometers, oxygen containers, chemotherapy/radioactive substances, illicit drugs or pressurized canisters.

Locations will accept vaping devices and cartridges, but not those containing lithium-ion batteries. Residents are encouraged to remove batteries prior to drop off or to consult with stores that recycle lithium-ion batteries.

Law enforcement agencies across the country collected 882,919 pounds of unwanted medicines during last year’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
