Man arrested in fatal southeast Denver shooting over alleged money dispute
Denver police arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal shooting that took place in southeast Denver Thursday afternoon.
Daniel Villegas, 19, faces a first-degree murder charge after he allegedly shot and killed a 19-year-old male victim in the 10100 block of East Virginia Avenue around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the Denver Police Department said in a Monday night news release.
Officers found the victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, according to the release. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A GoFundMe identified the victim as 19-year-old Elijah Hernandez.
The suspect and victim knew each other and it is believed they were involved in a dispute over money owed by the victim, police said. According to an arrest affidavit, an acquaintance of the victim told police he had left their apartment to meet with someone and did not return. Messages from the victim’s Instagram account showed he was meeting with someone to conduct a firearm transaction, the affidavit said.
Investigators used interviews, surveillance footage, and the Aurora Police Department’s automated license plate reader system — as Villegas allegedly traveled through Aurora before the shooting — to identify him as the suspect, according to the release. He was arrested Sunday in a joint operation with the APD.
The final determination of charges will be made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
