1 hospitalized in Denver police shooting near Dry Gulch Park

One person was injured and hospitalized in a police shooting near Lakewood / Dry Gulch Park in west Denver on Tuesday evening.

The suspect, a man, was armed with a rifle-type gun and threatened a responding officer with it while hiding in an alleyway in the area of 1000 South Quitman Street, Denver Police Department Chief Ron Thomas said in a news conference posted to social media.

Objects in the area gave the man cover and prompted a standoff for “well over an hour” until an officer was able to shoot and injure the suspect, who is currently in the hospital with the extent of his injuries unknown, Thomas said.

An officer first responded to the area around 3:41 p.m. Tuesday on a call about a man threatening others with a gun, Thomas said. Upon arrival, that officer contacted the suspect and told him to drop the weapon, while also calling in a “significant number” of other officers to help secure the area and evacuate nearby residents.

What then ensued was a prolonged standoff that was almost declared a barricade incident given the amount of shelter the man was able to take away from officers, Thomas said. Then, just before 5 p.m., the man threatened an officer, who fired a number of shots, hitting the suspect.

Thomas could not immediately say why the man was in the area, or his demeanor during the standoff, but did say that the man was engaged with family members before the incident began, and that they may be able to share more about what happened.

No officers were injured in the incident.

As is standard protocol, the case has been turned over to the department’s homicide investigation unit, as well as Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
