Food Bank of the Rockies to expand operations with new Aurora facility

Food Bank of the Rockies will open a new facility in Aurora this winter that will help the organization consolidate operations and store more food to better serve the Denver metro area, the organization said on Tuesday.

The new 270,000-square-foot distribution center will allow the organization to distribute 100 million pounds of food annually within a few years and expand its workforce development program, the group said in a news release.

Food Bank of the Rockies President and CEO Erin Pulling said the organization outgrew its space almost 20 years ago. The organization started in 1978.

“We’re thrilled to open a new hub designed to support our mission of nourishing people facing hunger with better food, stronger partnerships, and greater efficiency,” Pulling said. “This isn’t just a building — it’s a foundation for reaching more neighbors with fresh, nutritious, familiar food, and for building a future where no one has to wonder where their next meal will come from.”

The new facility is a $75 million project funded by donors, with Capital Campaign Committee Chair Cal Fulenwider and the Fulenwider Family Foundation matching $500,000 donations, according to a fact sheet about the project.

Other project donors included 9News, FirstBank and Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, LLP.

The project is currently 85% funded and organizers are seeking donors to raise the final 15% or just over $11 million.

With the distribution center, Food Bank of the Rockies will be able to double its cold food storage, triple its volunteer capacity, quadruple its kitchen space, reduce operating costs by $500,000 each year by consolidating operations and increase the distribution of culturally responsive food, the food bank said.

“We’re not just delivering food — we’re delivering on our mission to prioritize the preferences and needs of our community with dignity and respect,” Pulling said in the release.

Food Bank of the Rockies, the largest hunger-relief organization in the Rocky Mountain region, serves all 23 counties in Wyoming and 32 counties in Colorado. The group said it distributes enough food every day for more than 185,000 meals.
