As was predicted, big snow has been hitting Colorado with more on the way. As a result, Rocky Mountain National Park has already implemented the Colorado Vehicle Traction Law.

Per park estimates, around 18 to 24 inches of snow should end up falling at the park through Wednesday evening. Some parts of the park could see higher totals, too, with up to 36 inches of snow expected on Longs Peak and up to 30 inches of snow expected at the Alpine Center and at Bear Lake.

Amid the heavy snow, all vehicles – including four wheel drive, all wheel drive, and two wheel drive – must have properly rated tires – either mud and snow, mountain and snow, or all-weather tires – with adequate tread – 3/16″. Those without proper tires are required to use approved traction control devices, which may include devices like chains, cables, tire/snow socks, or studs – note that all devices falling into these categories are not approved. Note that this applies to rental vehicles entering the park – ensure tires are worthy of travel amid Colorado’s traction law conditions.

Meanwhile, heavy snow is expected to continue throughout the day on Tuesday into Wednesday around much of the state, particularly in areas of higher elevation and favoring northern and central Colorado. The I-25 corridor, however, won’t be skipped, with snow expected on Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a ‘winter storm warning’ for parks of Colorado, including Denver, Castle Rock, Boulder, and Estes Park. This area also includes Rocky Mountain National Park.
