Landspout tornado spotted near Denver airport

Landspouts form differently from supercell tornadoes, and they are typically smaller, weaker, and don’t last as long, but they are real tornadoes.

AURORA, Colo. — A landspout tornado briefly touched down in the eastern Aurora area, south of Denver International Airport, at approximately 2:20 p.m. Sunday.

Multiple reports confirmed the touchdown near Interstate 70 and E-470 and north of the Plains Conservation Center. The tornado is believed to have lifted within minutes of forming, with no reports of damage or injuries.

9NEWS Weather Impact Team meteorologist Chris Bianchi said this would be the first confirmed tornado in Colorado in 2026.

Bianchi noted the tornado was a landspout — a far more common variety in Colorado than the large supercell tornadoes seen in other parts of the country. Colorado sees roughly 45 tornadoes per year, and landspouts account for an estimated 85 to 90 percent of them.
