RTD adds rail cars, ramps up security for busy downtown weekend events
The Regional Transportation District is adding rail cars to several lines and increasing security as it prepares for a surge in ridership from major events across downtown this weekend.
RTD expects heavy crowds Friday through Sunday as fans head to Fan Expo Denver at the Colorado Convention Center, Morgan Wallen concerts at Empower Field at Mile High and the Outside Days festival at Auraria Campus.
The close proximity of the venues to multiple rail stations and bus stops makes public transit a convenient option for avoiding traffic and parking hassles. Additional RTD police and security personnel will be out across the system, with a stronger presence at key stations and stops, according to the agency.
RTD will add cars to the D, E, H, N and W lines to handle the higher demand. The D and H lines serve stations including Colfax at Auraria, Theatre District-Convention Center and the Downtown Loop. The E and W lines reach Auraria West, Empower Field at Mile High and Union Station. The A, B, G and N lines also serve Union Station.
Customers should check the RTD website or Next Ride trip planner for exact times and expect possible crowding, especially after events end. Auraria West Station will be closed for events at Empower Field.
Several local routes serve the venues directly. For Empower Field concerts, riders can use Routes 30, 31, 1, 15L and 16. Fan Expo and Performing Arts Complex attendees can take the ART Route and 16th Street FreeRide. Transfers to the E and W lines at Union Station are available via the Flatiron Flyer and local Routes 0, 9, 10, 15, 20 and 32.
Park-n-Ride lots throughout the metro area offer easy access to transit. RTD’s Impact Team members will be stationed at Theatre District-Convention Center Station, Colfax at Auraria Station and Union Station to help with questions and wayfinding.
Be patient with large crowds on platforms, trains and buses.
