Becca Huffer knows how to win at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club.

After Wednesday’s first round of the Inspirato Colorado Women’s Open, the Littleton High grad, who won the title in 2013 and 2019, is in contention for her third title with several other previous winners.

Huffer fired a 3-under 69 with five birdies for a tie for fifth one shot off the lead held by four golfers, including defending champion Alyaa Abdulghany.

Haylee Harford Sanchez, the 2023 winner, Kate Villegas and Natasha Kiel are tied with Abdulghany atop the leaderboard at 4-under. Abdulghany, who started her day on the 10th hole, was even par after the first nine holes of the day but shot 32 on a back nine that included a hole-in-one on the eighth hole to go with four birdies.

Clariss Guce, the 2022 winner, is part of the group at 2-under.

Huffer, who won the high school state title in 2006 and 2008, got to 4-under after the 12th hole but made a bogey on the par-5 18th hole. The former LPGA Tour player tied for third last year and finished two shots out of the playoff won by Abdulghany, who is trying to become the first back-to-back champion.

Twelve players are under par and within three shots of the lead. Eleven more, including former DU golfer Emma Bryant, whose brother Davis plays on the DP World Tour and won the Colorado Open in 2024, are even.

Lavanya Gupta is the low amateur after Wednesday’s round at 2-under. Gupta signed with Kansas in December to play college golf.

The second begins at 7 a.m. Thursday at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club. The total purse is $200,000 and the winner takes home $50,000.
