Search and rescue team uses drone to drop critical supplies to lost hikers
Douglas County Search and Rescue (DCSAR) used a drone to drop critical supplies to lost hikers near Bear Mountain on Thursday evening.
According to a post from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO), reports had indicated that the subjects were low on water and phone battery. Multiple teams responded to the call. While rescuers were on the way, the drone team was able to locate the subjects, establish communication, confirm they were uninjured, and complete the care package supply drop.
The DCSO said that the missing hikers did an “excellent job staying in place, calling for help once they realized they were disoriented and providing their coordinates.”
The search and rescue teams reached the hikers and brought them to safety.
“We’re proud of the work our team put in and are extremely grateful for the support provided by the OEM Helitack crew and our deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office,” DCSAR said in the post. “This operation was a great example of how strong partnerships, coordinated resources, traditional search and rescue techniques, and emerging technologies can all work together to achieve a positive outcome.”
