Two new wildfires ignite near Utah-Colorado border

Two new wildfires have broken out near the Utah-Colorado border within the past 24 hours.

According to the Moab Valley Fire Department, the Snyder Mesa Fire and Jones Fire are both burning on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land in Grand County near the Colorado border, south of the Colorado River and spreading toward Colorado.

The Lower Valley Fire District reports that the Jones Fire is burning at about 1,450 acres. The fire is located one mile west of the Utah/Colorado state line, according to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit and about two miles southeast of the Colorado River in the McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area.

The Snyder Fire is about 40 acres, according to the fire management unit. It is located one mile west of the Utah/Colorado state line and eight miles south of the Colorado River.

According to the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit, these are only two of eight confirmed wildfires that the organization and its partners are responding to due to lightning received in the past 24 hours.

The fire management unit said that engines, crews and aircraft are working on suppression efforts on all fires, and that the public should “stay vigilant and avoid any activities that could add to the problem.”
