Broncos to sign undrafted punter Nik Constantinou, defensive back Cam Allen
Shortly after the NFL draft concluded Saturday, the Broncos reached an agreement to sign a tight end from Australia.
Now they’ve added a punter from Down Under.
A source confirmed Monday that Denver will sign undrafted Nik Constantinou, a Melbourne native who averaged 41.3 yards gross and 39.1 net in 2023 at Texas A&M. The agreement follows Denver securing undrafted tight end Thomas Yassmin, a native of Sydney who played at Utah.
The Broncos on Monday also reached an agreement to sign undrafted Purdue defensive back Cam Allen. A source said he will receive a $5,000 signing bonus but did not get any of his contract guaranteed.
Draft analyst Dane Brugler had rated Allen as the No. 63 cornerback prospect entering the draft, which ran last Thursday through Saturday. The Broncos will evaluate Allen as both a nickel back and a safety.
In a continuing effort to beef up the secondary, the Broncos selected Missouri cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine in the fifth round of the draft. In addition to Allen, other defensive backs to have reached agreements to sign as undrafted free agents are safety Omar Brown and cornerback Quinton Newsome, both from Nebraska.
Before enrolling at Texas A&M in 2019, Constantinou, 24, played Australian rules football for the Aberfeldie Football Club and the PEGS Football Club. Constantinou was Texas A&M’s regular punter the past four years, his best season being 2021, when he averaged 46.6 yards gross and 43.8 net.
The Broncos’ incumbent punter is Riley Dixon. A source said Constantinou, like Yassmin, qualifies for the International Player Pathway program. So if the Broncos want to invoke it, Constantinou wouldn’t count on their 90-man offseason roster limit. He also, if he doesn’t make the 53-man roster, could take up a free roster spot on the practice squad.
Constantinou and Allen are expected to report to Centura Health Training Center along with other rookies on Thursday, May 9, for that weekend’s Broncos rookie minicamp.
Franklin-Myers trade official
Defensive end John Franklin-Myers has signed his renegotiated contract and the Broncos officially announced Monday his acquisition from the New York Jets for a 2026 sixth-round pick.
“It’s real,’’ Franklin-Myers told the team website. “It really is. The process was taxing and what an opportunity I have to come here.”
Franklin-Myers’ agent, Cliff Brady, told The Denver Gazette on Saturday the teams had been working on the trade for three weeks. It became agreed to after Franklin-Myers flew to Denver on Saturday and passed his physical.
Franklin-Myers agreed to a new two-year, $15 million contract with the Denver with $10 million guaranteed. He had been under contract with the Jets through 2025, with $3.184 million of his $13.3 million base salary guaranteed for 2024 and none of his $14.35 million base salary guaranteed for 2025.
“I’m going to bring physicality,’’ he said. “I’m going to bring leadership and somebody who’s just not going to stop, won’t quit. … That’s what I’m about. I’m about winning. I’m about helping the team win and doing everything I can for my teammates.”
Franklin-Myers added that Broncos defensive tackle D.J. Jones has reached out to him and the newcomer is looking forward to playing alongside him.
Briefly
Thursday is the deadline for teams to pick up fifth-year options on players selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft. The Broncos won’t exercise the $22.4 million option on quarterback Zach Wilson, acquired last week from the Jets. They already have picked up the $19.8 million option on CB Pat Surtain II for 2025. … Broncos assistant general manager Darren Mougey said there’s “been a lot of talk” on the team about the NFL’s new kickoff rules and what sort of players to use but that a lot won’t be known until it is seen how things look in game action. … The Broncos are considering inviting Colorado State defensive back Ron Hardge to their rookie minicamp as a tryout player.
