Denver Police Department officers arrested a suspect in connection with a shooting that took place Friday morning.

Victor Rubio Pinerez, 26, was arrested Friday afternoon on suspicion of criminal attempt to commit murder in the first degree, first-degree assault and false imprisonment, according to a DPD news release. The male victim was hospitalized and is expected to survive his injuries.

Police first responded to a report of a shooting in the 1100 block of South Logan Street just before 5:30 a.m. Friday morning, according to the release.

Upon arrival, police found a man on the ground with a gunshot wound to his leg and a laceration on his head, according to the affidavit for Rubio Pinerez’s arrest. The victim was transported to a hospital, where he told police that he had run into Rubio Pinerez, who he has known for about a year.

The victim also informed investigators that Rubio Pinerez gave him and a female friend a ride home in his Honda sedan, according to the affidavit. But after Rubio Pinerez dropped her off, he allegedly refused to drop the victim off at his home, with the suspect’s reasoning having something to do with the license plates on his vehicle.

The victim then told police that Rubio Pinerez kept driving and would not let him out of the car; at one point, the two of them began physically pushing each other as Rubio Pinerez was driving, according to the affidavit. The victim tried multiple times to remove the keys from the ignition, but he was unsuccessful, he told police in the affidavit.

At some point during the the interaction, Rubio Pinerez pulled out a gun, shot the victim in the upper right leg and hit him in the forehead with the butt of the firearm, according to the affidavit. As the victim then began bleeding in the vehicle and Rubio Pinerez let him out in the 1100 block of South Logan Street.

The victim denied that either party was using drugs in the incident, but did state that the pair had been drinking and he has known Rubio Pinerez to carry guns, according to the affidavit.

The final determination of charges will be made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
