Large structure fire leaves plume of black smoke in Aurora
Aurora fire responders began battling a large structure fire in the area of East Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street Saturday afternoon. Multiple witnesses noticed the large, dark plume of smoke hanging over the city.
The rising smoke could be seen for miles.
Aurora Fire Rescue designated the incident as a second-alarm fire around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to a social media post by the department. South Metro Fire Rescue and the Denver Fire Department noted that they were requested to respond to the fire.
A video posted by Jeremy Tramontana shows the fire roaring from a nearby building.
It started on the 5th floor, a spokesperson told The Denver Gazette’s news partner, 9News. Crews initially tried to attack it from inside the building.
As conditions worsened, they were forced to fight the fire from the outside and called in a fifth-alarm response.
Aurora Police said the intersection of Colfax and Peoria has been shut down while crews work the fire. They expect to be fighting the fire into the evening.
No one was inside the building when the fire started, and there were no injuries to firefighters.
